Biography of 2nd Lieutenant Douglas William Paterson
Douglas William Paterson was just nineteen when he was killed in Belgium on the 31st March 1918 while serving with the First Border Regiment. He was quite a newly minted officer, his commission to Second Lieutenant dated the 29th August 1917. He was born in Glasgow on the 16th August 1898 at 10 Sandyford Place, the eldest son of Peter and Isabella Paterson. His father was a Doctor. Douglas was a pupil at Glasgow Academy and went on to complete his school education at Glenalmond College. He left school at a time when the future of young men was in the hands of the War. His connection to the University of Glasgow was as a member of the OTC, which he joined in 1917.
A month later, in September 1917 he arrived in France en route to Belgium. His battalion had been in many actions. It had begun the war in Burma and later taken part in the Gallipoli campaign but it was now bound for the Western Front .In February they arrived in the Passchendaele area and on 26th March moved to Poperinghe and camped in the vicinity, sending out working parties in the Army Battle Zone. The German Offensive had begun. Lieutenant Douglas William Paterson was killed in action on the 31st March. He was buried at Nine Elms British Cemetery in Belgium, to the west of Poperinghe. He is remembered on the Rolls of Honour of his schools, Glasgow Academy and Glenalmond College, and by the University of Glasgow where he trained to be an officer.
