Biography of Lieutenant Robert Baird Rowley Orr
Robert Baird Rowley Orr (born Robert Baird Orr) was born on the 14th March 1887 at 15 Lilybank Gardens, Hillhead, Partick, Lanarkshire. He was the son of James Rowley Orr, a Solicitor with the firm T C Young & Rowley Orr, and Annabelle Orr (née Baird), who had married on the 17th December 1884 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. The family lived at Leddriegreen House in Strathblane, Stirlingshire, just north of Glasgow.
Robert came to the University of Glasgow from the Glasgow Academy to study Law and graduated BL on the 14th November 1914. During his time here he studied: Logic and Psychology, Latin, French, Civil Law, Law of Scotland, Conveyancing and International Private Law. His brother, Eric, also studied Law at the University.
Arriving in France on the 3rd April 1915, Robert served with the 9th Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was attached to the 4th Sqdn. Royal Flying Corps. Lieutenant Robert Baird Rowley Orr was killed, alongside the pilot, in an air crash while flying as an observer on the 3rd July 1917. He is commemorated at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Lijssenthoek, near Ieper, Belgium.
