Biography of Engineer Lieutenant John Murray

John Murray was born on 11th May 1886 and attended Hillhead High School. He then went to the University of Glasgow where he graduated BSc in Engineering in 1909.

Following his graduation John served an apprenticeship with Messrs. David Rowan & Co before going to work at Denny's shipbuilding yard in Dumbarton. He was successful at Denny's and was being given increasingly responsible work until the start of the war.

Upon the outbreak of war he offered his services to the Admiralty, and in February 1915, was appointed to HMS Shannon, Second Cruiser Squadron, and was latterly attached to a torpedo flotilla as an Engineer Lieutenant. He was lost at sea on 7th March 1916 whilst on duty.

John was described as "a man of strong and attractive personality" whose "career of bright promise" had been cut short.
