Biography of Private Ian Norman Mackay
Ian Norman Mackay was born on the 1st October 1894 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. He was the son of Alexander Mackay, a Wine Merchant and Janie Gardner Mackay, nee Norman, who had married on the 16th June 1886 while residing in Lenzie, in the Cadder parish, Dunbartonshire. Ian was educated at Glasgow Academy, Cargilfield, and Fettes College before coming to Glasgow University. He matriculated in the summer of 1913, aged 18. He studied in the Faculty of Medicine, taking classes in Botany and Physics in his first year. He lived at 13 Woodlands Terrace, Glasgow while at University.
Private Ian Norman Mackay served with the 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Highland Light Infantry, and was killed in action on 19th January 1915, aged 20. He is buried in the Bethune Town Cemetery, in the Pas de Calais region of France.
