Biography of Lieutenant William Crookenden Taylor
William Crookenden Taylor was born at 17 New Stock Street, Paisley, in 1897, to William Crookenden Taylor – a builder – and Mary Crookenden Taylor. The family resided in Norwell, Castlehead, Paisley.
William was educated at Paisley Grammar School and Glasgow Academy, and, in 1914, at the age of 17, he matriculated at the University of Glasgow to study Medicine. In his first year, William enrolled in the classes of Chemistry and Zoology.
William's time at University was shortlived, and his studies were put on hold after less than a year. In July 1915, he was commissioned to the 13th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, and was made a Second Lieutenant on the 16th of August. He was reported as having recovered from being gassed in 1917.
Lieutenant William Crookenden Taylor was a member of the 42nd Battalion of the Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action in 1918, aged 21.
