Biography of Private J Weir

James Weir was born in 1895 at the Corsock Schoolhouse, Corsock Bridge, Kirkcudbrightshire. He was the son of James Weir, a schoolmaster, and Anne Weir. He attended Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School before matriculating at the University of Glasgow in 1913 in the faculty of Arts. He attended the University for one year and studied mathematics before enlisting in September 1914 in the 1/5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers. He then transferred to the Machine Gun Corps where he was Company Quatermaster Sergeant. He served at Ypres, Peronne and Amiens. He was killed in action on the 8 August 1918, aged 23, and is buried in Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, (grave ref: II.B.19).
