2nd Lieutenant A G Shearer

Biography of 2nd Lieutenant A G Shearer

Andrew Giffin Shearer was born on 16th December 1898 at 1 Clayton Terrace, Dennistoun, Glasgow, to Mary Giffin Stewart and the Reverend Thomas Hamilton, Minister of Greenhead Parish Church in Bridgeton. He grew up in the family home at 1 Abbotsford Avenue, Rutherglen and attended Rutherglen Academy, now known as Stonelaw Academy. He joined the 113th Scout Group.

After school he went up to the University of Glasgow to study Medicine, first matriculating in the autumn of 1915, aged 16. He joined the OTC in November 1915, and on 30th May 1916, enlisted to serve in the army. According to his attestation papers he was aged 17, not very tall at 5 feet 8 inches and weighing just 120 pounds with a chest expansion of just over 33 inches.

He served first in the Home Reserve, but was mobilised and posted to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 30th June 1917. After a period of training he was commissioned to the 4th Battalion of the Royal Scots on 31st October. His referee on the application form for a commission was the Reverend Thomas Hislop, minister of Bridgeton, who said of him, "he is a nice boy and comes from good stock."

It is believed that he saw active service in France, though the details are not known. He survived the war and in April 1920 requested to be commissioned in the reserve of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, a request that was granted. In November 1920 he was promoted to a full Lieutenant. By then, in the autumn of 1920, he had returned to his medical studies at Glasgow and matriculated for his third year.

He continued his studies and seemed to be doing fine, as evidenced by a commendation in Clinical Surgery in the session 1922-1923 and a second class certificate in Dermatology. Curiously, his name does not appear in the list of candidates for the final exam. He did not graduate. He is recorded as having worked in the munitions factory at Bishopton, Renfrewshire. He seems to have remained unmarried. Andrew Shearer died on 26th January 1990 at the Erskine Hospital for ex-servicemen.
