Lance Corporal William Stephen Benton

Biography of Lance Corporal William Stephen Benton

William Stephen Benton was born in Forres, Morayshire. His father William was alive and described as a ‘commissioning agent’ when William matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1912 to begin his studies in Engineering. He died before William began his second year, however. William’s family lived at 178 Midstock Road, Aberdeen while he was at University, and he had two different term-time addresses. In his first year he lived at 17 Hamilton Drive, and in his second year at 16 Lawrence Street, Dowanhill, Glasgow.

His undergraduate career had its ups and downs. After initial difficulties he recovered well and passed his exams in March 1913 and 1914 with comfortable margins. He must have been very close to graduation. But, like many of his contemporaries, he was in a hurry to serve. He enlisted as a Lance-Corporal in the 4th Gordon Highlanders and went to war. There is no record of his returning to study after the war ended.
