Biography of Lieutenant Robert Andrew

Robert Andrew was born on the 17th January 1893 in the Parish of Wells, in Shetland, in the manse where his father was Minister. He was the eldest of Robert and Martha Andrew’s six children. Robert began studying at the University of Glasgow in 1912, taking classes in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Logic in his first year. He gained a first-class certificate for Mathematics in 1913, which may have encouraged him to take Mathematics again in his second year, alongside Natural Philosophy and English. When war broke out, he had almost completed a joint degree in both Arts and Science, however his role in the Officers’ Training Corps throughout his time at University meant he immediately signed up to join the war effort.

He enlisted as a Private for the Camerons, but within six weeks was appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant for the 12th Service Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Having undergone training in Bristol, the battalion was mobilised for war, and landed at Boulogne in September 1915. He was given leave in March 1916 and returned to Shetland, before being deployed to Salonika, where the battalion were engaged in action against the Bulgarian Army. During the Battles of Doiran in May 1917, Robert was found to be missing after reaching the third line of the Bulgarian trenches. He was later presumed dead on the 8th May 1917. 2nd Lieutenant Robert Andrew is remembered on the Doiran Memorial in Northern Greece and the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour.
