Walter Elliot Memorial Library

The Walter Elliot Memorial Library was created in honour of Walter Elliot, Rector of the University from 1947 to 1951 and MP for Kelvingrove. An appeal for subscriptions towards a memorial was launched upon his death in 1958 by Harold Macmillan, W.S. Morrison, Lord Boyd Orr, Thomas Johnston, Hector Hetherington, and Colin Coote. It was suggested that the memorial take the form of a library and reading room to be incorporated in the extensions planned to the Student's Union of which Elliot was a student and president before The Great War.

The Walter Elliot Memorial Library was designed by William John Fairweather, the University's Building Officer, and opened by the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan in April 1963.
