Chaplain to the Forces
Vernon Gallard Clarke
The Reverend Vernon Gallard Clarke was born in Hastings and attended the High School of Glasgow. He studied at the University, graduating MA in 1934 and BD in 1937, and became minister of Moncrieffe Church in East Kilbride.

Clarke joined the Gordon Highlanders as a chaplain in 1940 and went to North Africa in January 1941. He was appointed Senior Chaplain attached to the Scots Guards and was at the Battles of Tobruk, Benghazi and El Alemain: his Brigade Commander wrote that "he always accompanied the battalion into battle and his courage was magnificent." He died in hospital after an operation on 22 September 1942.
