Robert Stevenson Morrison was born on 20 October 1891, in Falkirk, son of John Morrison a cabinetmaker. He attended Falkirk High School before enrolling at the University of Glasgow in autumn 1911.

Initially he studied Physics and Maths as well as Chemistry, but only as necessities to enable him to pursue his love of Chemistry. He received a 1st class award in the Physical Chemistry labs in his third year, and was 2nd in his year in Inorganic Chemistry in his final year. He graduated BSc in April 1915. His father had died by this time, and so was not able to enjoy those triumphs.

He was Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant, in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) on 5 December 1915, and was killed in action the next month on 7 January 1916. In addition to the University of Glasgow First World War memorial, he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, listed on the Falkirk High School Memorial, and on the Evening Times Roll of Honour dated 17 January 1916.
