Robert Brown Aitchison Macdonald


Robert Brown Aitchison MacDonald was born on the Isle of Luing, in the parish of Kilbrandon. His father, Archibald, worked as a teacher and the family lived in the school house. He attended school at Albert Road Academy in Pollockshields.

In 1912 Robert came to the University of Glasgow to study the arts. He took Higher Latin, Logic and Metaphysics and Maths, He also took French, for which he won a first class certificate.

Instead of carrying on with his studies, in 1914 Robert enlisted with the 6th Camerons. He lived through the Battle of Loos, "without even a scar" and received the 1914-1915 Star. In February 1916 he received a commission with the 9th Bn. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He died at Contalmaison on 17th August 1916.
