William Stewart

William Stewart was born on 16th July 1875 to Andrew and Maggie Giffen Stewart of Mainshill, Beith in Ayrshire.

William completed two degrees at the University of Glasgow. He graduated from his first, an MA, on 7th November 1895 having taken course in: Latin, Greeks, Maths, English, Roman Law and Logic. Between 1897-1900 he studied for a degree in Law, graduating on 1st November 1900. During this time he won two prizes in Conveyancing and a prize in International Public Law.

Following his degree he worked as a solicitor in Beith. He also acted as clerk and treasurer on the school board and was a joint agent for the Commercial Bank.

He received his commission as Major for the 4th Royal Scots Fusiliers on the outbreak of war. Major William Stewart died in Gallipoli on 12th July 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
