Roll of Honour
Robert Miller Stevenson
Robert Miller Stevenson was born in 1894 in Dennistoun, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, the son of Robert Miller Stevenson, a Draper, and Elizabeth Stevenson (née Rae). He was a medical student at the University from 1913 to 1915, a member of the Officer Training Corps, and in such a hurry to serve his country that he signed up before he had finished his course.
Private Robert Miller Stevenson served in France with the 9th Bn. Highland Light Infantry, and was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on the 26th August 1916. His name has a place on the Thiepval Memorial. He was twenty two. The news of his death would have been conveyed to his parents, who lived at 151 Whitehill Street, Dennistoun. The gravestone at his family plot in Sandymount Cemetery, Springboig, Glasgow, records that he died ‘when attempting to rescue a wounded officer’ and in doing so ‘he gave his life for another’.
