James (Reverend) Cappell

MA 1898

James Cappell was born on 31st October 1876 in Crieff, Perthshire. He studied at Morrison's Academy, Crieff. His mother and father were Mary and Thomas Cappell. His father, Thomas, was an army pensioner. Cappell was younger brother to R. Cappell, who resided in Glasgow.

Cappell resided at 530 Great Western Road, Glasgow, throughout his time at Glasgow University. He studied Arts between 1894 and 1898. He took classes in Senior Latin, Middle Greek, and Mathematics within his first year. Within his third year, Cappell took classes in Logic and Literature. He also took classes in History and Moral Philosophy within his final year. Cappell is received a 'Highly Distinguished' prize in History. He graduated on the 12th April 1898.

After he graduated, Cappell became a Curate and resided at Radford Hill, Stafford. For a time, Cappell was curate at St. Pauls, Edinburgh. Cappell was married to Alice E. Cappell, of "Vine House," Revidge Rd., Blackburn, Lancashire.

Cappell was Chaplain 4th Class of the H.M. Forces. He was also a part of the Army Chaplain's Department, and attended the 1st/9th Battalion, Royal Scots. Cappell died of Pneumonia on 4th February 1918. He is remembered with Honor at Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.
