Carl Otto Anderson was born in 1891 in Bo’ness, Linlithgowshire, the second son of Annie Anderson a housekeeper and Johan Anderson a shipping clerk or cargo superintendent. He had three other siblings: William, Anna and Martha. His brother William White Anderson also attended the University and is featured in the Roll of Honour.

He studied at the University of Glasgow from 1910 until 1918. On the 20 June 1913 he graduated with an Arts degree, (MA), whilst in 1918 he graduated with a degree in medicine (MB ChB). He was a good student winning a number of prizes including one for first place of his class in Clinical Surgery (1916-1917). Whilst at the University he was also a member of the O.T.C

On the 29 October 1918, Carl became a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He died on the 25 March 1920 at Bellahouston Hospital, Glasgow from a Carbuncle in the neck and pyaemia at the age of only 29.
