In 1914 William came to the University of Glasgow to study for a degree in Medicine. He was a good student and received a 'credible mention' for his work in Practical Botany, first class honours for his class in Practical Zoology and a first class certificate in Medical Physics. Unfortunately he never completed his degree, as he joined the army having spent some of his time at university in the Officer Training Corps.

William was in the Special Reserve of Officers and then was in the 3rd Battlion Gordon Highlanders attatched to the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He was wounded in fighting on 1st July 1916 and died four days later on 5th July. He is buried in the Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension.
