Frederick Robert Hughes Hutton was born in Lenzie, Dunbartonshire on 16th October 1882, to James Hutton, a Chartered Accountant and Margaret C. Hutton. He was educated at Glasgow Academy.

In 1900 Frederick came to the University of Glasgow to study for an MA. He took a range of subjects including: Latin, Greek, Mathematics, English, Logic and Law. He was awarded a prize for English Literature in 1902. He graduated on 9th November 1905.

Lieutenant Frederick Robert Hughes Hutton received his commission in 1913 for the 9th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action near Ypres on 10th May 1915 and is remembered on the Menin Gate memorial there.
