John Inch

John came to the University of Glasgow in 1910 to study for a degree in the arts. He took a variety of classes including Mathematics, Logic and Hebrew. He particularly excelled in Greek, taking both Greek and Hellenistic Greek and winning a second class certificate in the latter. It has also been noted that he was a Divinity student, although this is not made entirely clear in the records his interest in Greek indicates that it may have been a path he was interested in following. On 20th November 1915 he graduated MA whilst already on military service.

Having finished his studies, although not graduated, John enlisted in the 6th Bn. Cameron Highlanders. He was then gazetted to the Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders where he was in the 1st/9th Bn. and attached to the 1st/8th Bn. 2nd Lieutenant John Inch fell in action in France on the 20th June 1916, aged 23. His headstone in the Maroeuil British Cemetery, France, reads;

'A Dumbarton Boy'.
