Laying the Foundation Stone, 1868The Prince and Princess of Wales laid the foundation stones of the new University at a ceremony on Gilmorehill. The building was later to be known as the Gilbert Scott building.

Chemistry Building Fire
Fire destroyed the roof of the old Chemistry building in the east wing of the Gilbert Scott Building. The Glasgow Herald reported that "the outbreak occurred in a top-storey room occupied by the University sailing club."
