Applied Geology (James S Dixon Chair)

Description

James Stedman Dixon (b 1846), a coalmaster, endowed a lectureship in Mining Engineering in 1902 and increased the endowment five years later to found the James S Dixon Chair of Mining. The founding ordinance was repealed in 1980 and teaching ceased. The University subsequently applied to the Secretary of State for Scotland to reallocate the funds, and in 1989 the endowment was used to found the James S Dixon Chair of Applied Geology.
