Biography of John Smyth Carroll

John Smyth Carroll, son of metal refiner John of County Tyrone,started university when he was nineteen years old. In 1877 he received his MA, having started his studies in 1872.

John went on to become a minister for the Free Church of Scotland. He worked in Rathen, Aberdeenshire and then came back to Glasgow to work in St John's Church. It was whilst he was minister of St John's, in 1907, that he became a Doctor of Divinity.

As well as being a minister, John also had a fine literary mind. He wrote two books about Dante: 'Exiles of Eternity: An Exposition of Dante's Inferno' and 'Prisoners of Hope: An Exposition of Dante's Purgatorio'. John also published poetry and sermons.
