Biography of Gedney Clark Bispham
Gedney Clark Bispham was born in the parish of St.Michael’s in Barbados on 6th November 1770 to John Camewell and Sarah Parris Bispham. He studied Medicine at Glasgow University and graduated M.D. in 1796. He returned to Barbados and married Thomasin Ann, daughter of a senior member of the Council, Thomas Miller, on 3rd January 1798. Gedney died on 10th October 1816. One of their children, also Gedney Clark Bispham, moved to Antigua with some family members and was associated with the firm of R&H Jefferson, producers of fine rum, shippers of sugar, and owners of several plantations, including Jefferson, Tweedie, Bispham and Yeamans Estates. The Bispham family who remained in Barbados owned at emancipation a relatively small number of enslaved people and are not associated with estate ownership.
