Roland Douglas Golightly was born in Monkseaton, Northumberland on 17th August 1927.

He attended the University of Glasgow from 1947 until 1951, studying Chemistry and Maths, both single and double, as well as Natural Philosophy, Geology and Botany. On the 15th June 1951, he graduated with an Ordinary Degree in Pure Science (B.Sc).

After completing his degree, he attended what was then called the West of Scotland Agricultural College, obtaining a Diploma in Agriculture (Hons). He then went on to join the WSAC faculty as a Soil Scientist before retiring in 1987.

Roland Douglas Golightly died on 12th December 2012.
