Gabriel Oluwole Omolaja Ishola Esuruoso was a prominent Nigerian veterinarian.

Born in Abeokuta, Nigeria on the 13th August 1934, Gabriel grew up in this area and attended the local Abeokuta Grammar School, followed by some time at the Veterinary School in Vom, Nigeria. While working he undertook a correspondence course in Journalism, and was offered a position as a Sub-Editor with the Daily Times. At the same time, he was awarded a government scholarship to study Veterinary Medicine in the United Kingdom. He was advised by his cousin, Professor Oladele Esuruoso, to go to the UK, as there were risks to writing the truth in Nigeria at that time.

Journeying to the UK, he studied at the South West Essex Technical College in London. Gabriel embarked on a degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow on the 8th October 1959. His studies were supported by a Western Nigerian Government Scholarship throughout his five years of study. His father, Isaac, a retired accountant, died during his first year.

In his first year Gabriel studied Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Animal Management. In his second year, he took classes in Animal Management, Veterinary Histology, Veterinary Anatomy and Veterinary Physiology & Biochemistry. The latter three courses were completed in his third year, alongside Veterinary Materia Medica, Veterinary Pathology & Bacteriology, Parasitology, Medicine (Clinical), Animal Husbandry, Preventive Medicine & Food Hygiene and Surgery & Obstetrics. The next two years completed his degree with classes in Food Hygiene & Food Inspection and Surgery & Obstetrics.

Gabriel graduated BVMS on the 9th November 1964. His student year book caption was "He paid heed to his study. Never did he use two words where one would suffice."

Returning to Nigeria, with wife, Victoria Wuraola Emmanuel (Aregbesola Ogunbode) and three children, he joined the Western State Government as a Veterinary Officer. He was advised by a senior to pursue a career in academia. He joined the University of Ibadan in 1965.

He completed his MSc in Immunology at Birmingham in 1966, followed by a PhD in 1970. He was recognised by the World Health Organisation as the first African holder of a Doctorate in Immunology.

Gabriel became Professor Esuruoso, teaching at the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and was a founding member of One Health World. He was the first African to become Dean of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan. He spearheaded the introduction of many medical degrees at Ibadan, and the establishment of the National Zoonoses Centre to study and prevent animal to human disease transfer. He has been called the Father of Veterinary Public Health in Nigeria.

In 2007, Gabriel enrolled at the International College of Evangelism, graduating in 2009. His faith was a huge part of his life, accompanying him through all of his achievements.

Gabriel died on the 26th January 2013. He was survived by his wife Victoria Wuraola, and his children Kenneth, Olufunmilayo, Gbolahan, Olusola, Stephen, Robert and Omolola. One child, Olusegun, had predeceased him.
