Biography of Lilian Maud Mitchell

One of the first 100 women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow.

Lillian was born on 9th April 1901 to Margaret (nee Beattie) and Thomas Pringle Mitchell. The family was living then at Braeside Street in Maryhill and her father was a railway clerk.Twenty years later, however, his occupation is recorded on Lillian's matriculation form as a solicitor, but no longer alive. She graduated M.A. in 1923 as a preliminary to studying Law. Her progress through the Law Faculty was not uniformly distinguished, though she gained first prize in Mercantile Law in the session 1925-26. She graduated LL.B in 1927. Lillian did not continue on a career path to professional qualification, however. She became a teacher and later an educational psychologist.
