Beatrice Mary Jones

Biography of Beatrice Mary Jones

One of the first 100 women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow.

Beatrice was born in Glasgow on the 28th March 1902 to Mary Adlington and Edwin Robert Jones. When her father registered the birth he described his occupation as a foreign correspondent but when she matriculated at Glasgow University in 1923 to begin her studies in the Law Faculty Beatrice recorded that he was a sales manager. She passed her exams, not always with ease, though she earned a second class certificate in Mercantile Law in the session 1925-26. Beatrice graduated B.L. in 1926.

After meeting both the academic and professional requirements for entry into the profession she obtained a practising certificate and worked with the firm of A. Ferguson & T.J. & T. Brown where she was one of the very few women in Scotland to become a partner. She was also a member of the Faculty of Procurators. Beatrice Jones died in Glasgow in 1988, aged 86.
