Alexander Robertson McKelvie graduated MB ChB on the 20th October 1924.

He was born in Simla, India, the son of George McKelvie, a preacher and University of Glasgow alumnus, and the younger brother of George Maurice McKelvie, also a University alumnus.

A medical student, Alexander Robertson first matriculated at the University in 1919, aged 19. His matriculation slip indicates he was living at the family home in Rutherglen. In his first year, Alexander was examined in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Physics. In his second year beginning in 1920, he studied Anatomy and Physiology. In his third year, he was examined in Therapeutics and Pathology, before going on to be examined in Surgery, Medical Practice, Midwifery and Public health in his final years.

Alexander Robertson studied as a medical practitioner upon graduating, working as an Ophthalmologist in Sudan and Kenya. According to a British Medical Journal obituary published in 1987, Alexander received a Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery from the University of Oxford.
