Biography of Hugh McCartney
Lieutenant Surgeon Hugh McCartney was born in Neilston on the 21st of September 1872, to John McCartney, a mason builder, and Ann McCartney.
McCartney graduated from Glasgow Veterinary College on the 18th of December 1894. He married Rose Crilly McCartney on the 2nd of January 1912, and they lived together at 65 Main Street, Neilston, East Renfrewshire.
During the First World War, McCartney served with the Army Veterinary Corps. He died of morphine poisoning at Akienhead Farm Military Hospital, on the 4th of November, 1915, aged 43. He left his wife, Rose, £82.4.6 in soldiers' effects after his death.
Lieutenant Surgeon Hugh McCartney is buried in Neilston Cemetery, and commemorated on the Neilston Kirk war memorial windows, as well as on the new civic war memorial on Main Street, Neilston.
