Biography of Dr Peter Rodger Ptolomey MacGuire

Peter Rodger Ptolomey MacGuire was born in Gourock on the 23rd of May, 1937. His father, Robert, worked as a sea-going Marine Engineer. Peter attended Gourock High School, where he excelled academically and was awarded the prize of School Dux.

Peter first matriculated at the University in the 1955-56 academic session, aged 18, to study for a BSc. He performed very well, winning several prizes over the course of his undergraduate degree. He graduated on the 5th of July, 1958, with the first of what would become a number of degrees from the University of Glasgow. Upon graduating from his BSc, Peter enrolled to study for a degree in Education. He excelled in this field too, winning a prize for his diploma dissertation in 1959, and graduating on the 2nd of November, 1963.

Upon graduating, Peter worked as a teacher, and lived in his hometown of Gourock. He resumed his studies in 1976, when he began work on his PhD with a grant from Jordanhill College of Education. The resulting thesis, ‘An investigation of the understanding of concepts in mechanics by pupils in Scottish Secondary schools’, was accepted in 1981, and MacGuire was awarded his doctorate on the 16th of January, 1982.

Three years later Dr MacGuire enrolled at the University of Glasgow for the fourth time, to study for an MSc in Information Technology. His focus was the design and implementation of IT systems in education. He graduated with an MSc on the 15th of July, 1987.

Upon graduating from his fourth degree from the University of Glasgow, Peter returned to teaching. He died in Greenock on the 12th of January, 2019.

Dr MacGuire generously made a bequest to the University to support cardiovascular research and PhD scholarships in Physics.
