Henry Alexander Mavor was a medical student at the University from 1880-1882. Mavor was born in approximately 1857 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, the son of James, a teacher.

Mavor matriculated to study Medicine at the University at the age of 23 in the Summer Session of 1880-1881 and enrolled for classes in Botany and Anatomy. He attended the Anatomy class of Professor John Cleland and the Botany class of Professor Isaac Bayley Balfour.According to the University Calendar for 1881-1882, the set textbooks for Anatomy at the time included: 'Quain's Anatomy,' 'Ellis's Demonstrations,' and 'Cleland's Directory for Dissection.' During his first session of study, Mavor resided at '131 Hope Street, Glasgow' and his home address was given as 'Devon Bank, Maxwell Road, Pollockshields.'

Mavor matriculated to study at the University for what would be his final year in Session 1881-1882 and enrolled for classes in Anatomy, Chemistry (in the class of Professor John Ferguson) and Zoology. Unfortunately, by this point in his University career, his father James is listed as deceased. Despite this, Mavor was successful in his studies and received a Second Class Certificate of Merit in the Practical Anatomy class of Professor John Cleland.

Mavor did not complete his studies after this year. However his son, the renowned playwright Osborne Henry Mavor later graduated from the University. A collection of Henry Alexander Mavor's lecture notes from his time as a medical student at the University is held within the University Archive.
