Dr Alice Julia Marshall was born in Stirling on the 12th of April 1891. She first matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1912, and graduated MB ChB in the autumn of 1917.

Dr Marshall was a resident at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and after graduating she joined the Royal's pathology department. In addition to her normal duties she specialised in gynaecological pathology, editing Professor John H. Teacher's textbook on gynaecological pathology after the latter's death. She also co-authored several papers on pathologies of the heart.

Along with Professor J.A.G. Burton she provided a blood transfusion service for the Royal Infirmary - an important facility prior to the central organisation of the blood transfusion service under the NHS.

After her retirement in 1956 she continued to work with Professor Burton, remounting and cataloguing pathological specimens of major historical importance. The Catalogue of Pathological Preparations of Dr. W. Hunter, Sir William Macewen , Prof. J.H. Teacher and Prof. J.A.G. Burton was published in 1962. As part of this work she was made Honorary Assistant Keeper. This was followed by Catalogue of the Pathological Preparations of Dr. William Hunter, in the Museum of the Anatomy Department and Catalogue of Anatomical Preparations of Prof. John Cleland, both published in 1970.

Dr Marshall also participated in the 1957 Mass Radiography Campaign, during which 714,915 Glaswegians were x-rayed in a largely successful effort to eradicate pulmonary tuberculosis from the city.

As a long-standing member of the department she played a role in the education of junior pathologists, contributing to the department's conviviality and distinct identity.

Her personal papers are held by the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Archives. Dr Marshall is also largely responsible for the survival of the records of the Royal Infirmary's Pathology Department held in these archives.
