Elizabeth Cecilia Knox was born in Glasgow on 21 October 1892, daughter of Mary H Knox and Adam Easton Knox, an Engineer.

She began studying at the University in 1912 at the age of 19, to take classes in Greek and Latin. Her matriculation slip for her first year tells us that her home address was Craig Dhu in Carmyle.

In her second year, she studied English, Moral Philosophy and Geology, for which she was awarded a first class certificate under Professor John Walter Gregory. In the following year, 1914, she took classes in History, political Economy and Higher English.

In her fourth year she studied Higher History, Honours History and Constitutional History and in her final year before graduating from the University MA she studied Higher History and Honours Constitutional History.

Upon graduation, she moved back to her family home and became a teacher. By the age of forty she had become a headmistress of a privately run Oakburn School in Windermere. She died in 1974.
