Jessie Gellatly Jarvie was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire on the 4 September 1895, the eldest daughter to Jessie Ann and John Jarvie, a financial secretary.

She first enrolled at the University in 1913, at the age of 18, to study French and Latin. Even in her first year her aptitude for languages is made clear by her prizes for prose composition in Latin and a certificate of distinction. Other prizes for her first year include those for composition and 'texts' in her French class and a first-class certificate.

In her second year she studied Higher French, Roman History and English and was awarded a first-class certificate in her Higher French language and literature class. During her third year she studied Logic, French and Latin followed by Honours in French and Latin in her final year.

Upon graduation Jessie moved to the Mill Hill area of London and worked as a Teacher. She died in 1980 in Sussex.
