Biography of Shankar Balasubramanian

Professor Shankar Balasubramanian was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) from the University of Glasgow on 28th June 2016.

Professor Shankar Balasubramanian was born in Chennai (formerly known as Madras) in 1966 and moved to the UK a year later. He grew up in Runcorn, Cheshire and attended Daresbury Primary School and Appleton Hall High School. He studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge 1985-1988 and then did a PhD with Professor Chris Abell that looked at enzyme chemistry, finishing in 1991. He then travelled to the USA as a SERC/NATO Research Fellow and worked in the group of Professor Stephen J Benkovic at Pensylvannia State University. In 1994 he returned to the University of Cambridge and worked in the Clinical School and the Department of Chemistry. In 2007 he received the post of Professor of Clinical Biology and in 2010 became Senior Group Leader at the CRUK Cambridge Institute. He has been the BBSRC Innovator of the Year and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He has also received many prizes such as the Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Organic and Biomedicinal Chemistry, the Biochemical Society Heatley Medal and Prize, and the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Medal.
