Biography of Máirtín Ó Murchú

Professor Ó Murchú was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from the University of Glasgow on 27th June 2016.

Professor Ó Murchú is an expert in Irish, having been Professor of the subject at Trinity College Dublin and Senior Professor of Irish at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. He was also a Director of the School of Celtic Studies at the latter. He has been integral to a standard pronunciation of Irish and his work on the matter has been described as ‘groundbreaking’. As well as studying Irish Gaelic he has also looked at Gaelic in Scotland, writing ‘East Perthshire Gaelic’ which examines the language and its history.
