Gregor Townshend was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) jointly with Alastair Kellock from the University of Glasgow during the Commemoration Day ceremony on 15th June 2016 for their contribution to rugby and community engagement.

Gregor Townshend was born 26th April 1973 in Edinburgh. He is a well-known rugby player and coach. As a player he has played for a variety of teams around the world, including: Gala RFC (Scotland), Northampton Saints (England), Brive (France), Castres (France), Border Reivers (Scotland), Natal Sharks (South Africa) and Montpellier (France). He also received a then record 82 caps for Scotland and was twice capped by the British Lions. He was part of the side that won the last five nations championship in 1999.

He has also seen success as a coach. As well as coaching his national side and he has also coached Borders and Edinburgh. In 2012 he became Head Coach for the Glasgow Warriors.
