Biography of Margaret Howat
Margaret Howat was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) with her partner, Malcolm, from the University of Glasgow during the Commemoration Day ceremony on 15th June 2016. This award marks their support which has led to some of the most significant cancer research breakthroughs made at the University and also their philanthropic work which extends into many other areas.
She co-founded the Howat Foundation in 2009 with Malcolm Howat which supports cancer research at the University of Glasgow, including The Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre. It also support a small Edinburgh charity named CCLASP - Children with Cancer and Leukaemia Advice and Support for Parents. Having been diagnosed with and treated for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia, she had been concerned for children going through the same experience, leading to her founding the foundation. In 2013 the Howat Foundation made a large donation to the Beatson Pebble Appeal which was recognised by Sir Alex Ferguson.
