Biography of Maria Schwertner

Maria Schwertner came to the University of Glasgow in 1911 at the age of 22. She joined the Arts faculty and studied English Literature and Language. Higher English Literature was taught by Professors William Dixon and John Smart.

Schwertner was born in Czernowitz, a city in western Ukraine which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her father, Franz, was a professor at the K. u. K. deutsches Technikum, Prague.

Schwertner started her studies in German and English at the Deutsche Karls-Universit├Ąt zu Prag in the winter semester of 1909, passing her teacher accreditation exams on 4 June 1916. On 3 July 1917, Maria Schwertner graduated and gained the title of Doctor of Philosophy.

Schwertner's doctoral thesis, 'Eine Wiener Sammlung von Wanderb├╝hnendramen des 17. Jahrhunderts' ('A Vienna collection of 17th-century travelling theatre dramas'), was sent to the University in Prague by Schwertner's husband, Theodor Stradal, on 19 June 1942, a few days after Maria's death.
