George William Hamilton

Biography of George William Hamilton

George William Hamilton matriculated at the University in 1834. He was the second son of Archibald, a Glasgow merchant.

Hamilton became a merchant in Jamaica (after slavery was abolished in 1834) and then Calcutta. George W. Hamilton was descended from a famous Glasgow mercantile family. His grandfather was John Hamilton of Northpark, one of the leading West India merchants in late-eighteenth-century Glasgow, and grandmother, Janet Bogle, of the Jamaica plantation and slave-owning family, the Bogles of Gilmorehill.

He died at Row, Dumbartonshire on 3 February 1901.
