Before pursuing a career in academia and sports administration, Michael Boit was one of Kenya’s middle-distance running stars. At the 1972 Munich Olympics he won bronze in the 800m and placed fourth in the 1500m. Over the next decade a full set of Commonwealth Games medals followed: 800m silver in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1974; 800m gold in Edmonton, Canada, in 1978; and 1500m bronze in Brisbane; as well as African Championship gold over 1500m at Dakar, Senegal, in 1979.

He was educated at St Patrick’s High School, Iten, and Kenyatta College (now University), Nairobi, before travelling to the United States where he graduated BSc from Eastern New Mexico University, MSc (twice) from Stanford University, and with a PhD in Education from the University of Oregon in 1986.

On his return to Kenya he was appointed to the faculty of Kenyatta University in the department of exercise and sports science. His work has focused on research into the physiology, genetics, nutrition and training of runners – often conducted in conjunction with colleagues at the University of Glasgow – and the support and development of sport and education in Kenya and Africa; in 2004 he co-founded the Kenya Scholar-Athlete Program.

Professor Boit has been appointed to many prestigious national and international posts in sports administration and governance. He served as Kenyan Commissioner of Sport (1990–97), and has been a member of the International Amateur Athletics Federation athletes’ commission and of the International Special Olympics Board among many others.
