George William Hamilton

Biography of George William Hamilton

George William Hamilton matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1799. His father, John Hamilton, West India merchant, was Lord Provost of Glasgow. His mother, Helen Bogle, was sister of Robert Bogle of Gilmorehill (the current estate on which the University of Glasgow is located) of the Glasgow merchant firm Bogle & Co.

After attending the University, G.W. Hamilton travelled to Jamaica where he became known for his ‘liberal education and gentlemanly demeanour’. On the island, however, he supervised a sugar estate for his relatives and also operated a major network of attorneys whose role it was to supervise estates and enslaved people.

G.W. Hamilton died at 27 Clarence Street, Edinburgh, on 18 October 1857, aged 71. He is buried in Glasgow Necropolis.
