William Douglas

Biography of William Douglas

William Douglas attended the University from 1812-1814, studying Latin and then Greek. He was the son of Reverend James Douglas, minister in Stewarton, who also attended the University in 1782.

Douglas went on to become a merchant in Jamaica, where he would likely have profited in the trade in slave grown produce such as coffee or sugar. Compared to the proportion of their population size in Great Britain, Scots were over-represented in Jamaica up to the end of chattel slavery in 1834.
