David Welsh

Biography of David Welsh

David Welsh matriculated as an Arts student of the University in 1807, attending the Greek class of John Young. He was born at Dalmellington, on 5 July 1787, son of David, a craftsman.

Welsh went on to study Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, and was ordained by the Presbytery of Lauder in on 31 July 1822. As tutor to the family of Colonel Alexander Walker in Edinburgh, Welsh travelled with him as his Chaplain to St Helena on his appointment as governor there in 1822.

Thereafter Welsh became Minister of Carsphairn from 1833 until his death in 1869.
