Biography of William Irvine

William Irvine was born in Glasgow in 1776, son of a William Irvine, Medical and Chemistry lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Irvine was educated at the Glasgow Grammar School and was one of the Duxes in 1787 and 1789. He began his University career at Glasgow in 1789 with an Arts and Humanities course, and went on to graduate MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1798, MFPSG in 1802, and licentiate of the College of Physicians of London in 1806.

Irvine was appointed Physician to the Forces. In 1808 he was stationed in Sicily, from where he wrote what was his most important work, Some Observations upon Diseases, chiefly as they occur in Sicily, based upon his observations on malarial fever and dysentery. Irvine was then stationed at Malta in January 1811, where he died of fever on 23 May 1811, aged 35.
