Biography of Giulio Franco Tosi

Giulio Franco Tosi, son of Franco Tosi, an engineer, was born on the 18 June 1887 in Legnano, Italy. He enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1906 to study Engineering. Whilst at the University for three years he took classes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, Physical Laboratory, and Engineering Class I Materials of Construction and Class III Prime Movers and Mechanics of Machinery.

Tosi returned to Legnano to take over his father's firm and the shipbuilding yard at Taranto. During the First World War Tosi's naval yard played a key role in supplying the Italian Navy with specialised engines in the construction of warships.

In 1912, Tosi was part of a group of Italian engineers from Milan in attendance at the Fifth International Congress of Chambers of Commerce and Commercial and Industrial Associations in Boston, Massachusetts. From 1917 Tosi was listed as a member of the UK Mechanical Engineers and as an Associate Member of the Institution of Naval Architects.
