Clément Marc Jumeau
Biography of Clément Marc Jumeau
Clément Marc Jumeau graduated MA from the University in 1935. He was born in Mahe, Seychelles, son of Francois, a landowner.
Educated at Saint Louis de Gonzague’s College in Mahé, Jumeau came to the UK, where he studied at Cambridge before enrolling at the University of Glasgow in 1932, attending classes in Medieval History, Logic, Geology, Economy, English and French, for which he won a certificate of merit for the honours II class in 1933-34. Upon graduating MA in 1935, Jumeau took two further years of classes in Civil Law, Constitutional Law and Public International Law, with the intention of graduating LLB.
Registered as a solicitor, Jumeau enlisted in the Intelligence Corps in 1939, and joined the British Secret Service in 1941. He received training as an agent at Wanborough Manor, Guilford, and Aston House, Stevenage. After serving in the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in Belgium, he was selected in 1941 to lead the CORSICAN mission from England to Belymas near Villamblard, Dordogne, France. One of his fellow agents on that mission was former Glasgow student Jean Philippe Charles Le Harivel. Captain Jumeau was among those captured and imprisoned in France, but escaped and managed to reach England via Portugal towards the end of 1942. Jumeau's third mission was again to France. This time the plane was shot down over Douvre-la-Délivrande, but Jumeau was able to parachute to the ground although wounded. He was imprisoned in a civilian jail in Frankfurt, where he contracted tuberculosis and was later forced to walk to the military prison of Fort Zinna at Torgau. Jumeau died on 26 March 1944 at the military prison-hospital at Buch, Berlin, aged 29.
