Irving William Burke graduated MBChB from the University in 1935, and obtained the Diploma of Public Health in 1943.

He was born at St George, Barbados, son of William Burke.

Burke worked as honorary surgeon of the Country Infirmary of Carmarthen, Wales. He was elected Member of the British Medical Association, and Royal Sanitary Institute (now Royal Society for Public Health). He went on to work for the Ministry of Health in Trinidad.
