Charles Richard Whitfield (1927- ) was Regius Professor of Midwifery at the University from 1976 to 1992.

Whitfield is a graduate of Queen's University, Belfast (MB, ChB and BAO) and held junior hospital posts before joining the RAMC in 1953. He specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology at military hospitals in Britain, Malta and Singapore, and returned to Belfast in 1964 to become Senior Lecturer in those subjects at Queen's University. He graduated MD in 1965 and in 1968 became full-time consultant to the Belfast hospitals.

In 1974, Whitfield was appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Machester in 1974. He held the post until coming to Glasgow two years later.
